Electrotherm-YOBYKES to roll out battery charging stations
Electrotherm to roll out battery charging stations
BS Reporter / Mumbai/ Ahmedabad February 18, 2010, 0:22 IST
Electrotherm India Ltd (EIL), the makers of the popular electric scooters Yobykes, will come up with a network of battery charging stations across the country this year which can, in turn, boost the sales of the e-bikes.
"We plan to start with a number of stations in Ahmedabad first, but, finer details are yet to be worked out", said AP Singh, vice-president and SBU-head of Auto of EIL. The company had earlier said that these charging stations would operate under the franchisee model.
The Ahmedabad-based company plans to collaborate with local garage owners in installing battery charging stations at a radius of around three kilomteres of major cities. Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore and Ahmedabad are some of the cities identified for setting up battery stations.
Electrotherm’s YO Speed, the 750 watt bike comes with a 33 AH battery and lasts for about two years, covering around 30,000 kms. The battery costs around Rs 8,000-10,000.
It generally takes around seven hours to charge the lead-based battery. It recently came up with the new 'alpha-weaver' battery, that will increase the travel range of the electric bikes from 70 kilometers(km) for a single charge to over 105 km, as against conventional lead acid batteries and at the same time bring down the charging time from eight to four hours. These batteries are also lighter by six kilograms compared to conventional batteries, claimed EIL. While the cost of charging is yet to be worked out on, it could be around Rs 4 per unit.
The move comes after the ministry of New and Renewable Energy has announced that it is working on the possibility of offering subsidies to those companies which set up a network of battery charging stations.
The company is in talks with the Centre as well as the state governments to push its case for abolishing taxes on electric vehicles(EVs) and offering subsidy on buying EVs.
Currently, the company has seven electric bike variants of which two are high-speed variants.
It plans to introduce two more scooters in the same segment during 2010. The high-speed segment will account for two-thirds of our sales within the next two years, Singh said.
EIL expects to nearly double its sales to 30,000 to 40,000 units in the coming fiscal on the back of the new launches this year and the 'alpha weaver' technology-based batteries it has developed for its scooters.
Nearly, 95,000 electric scooters were sold during 2008-09 and the industry is expected to grow by 10 per cent this fiscal. Delhi is the biggest market for electric bikes for EIL accounting for 20 per cent of its net sales followed by West Bengal at 15 per cent.

Electric Drive Transportation Association Annual Meet at Washington D C
Just returned back from Annual Conference of EDTA
http://www.electricdrive.org/ held at Washington D. C.
I have a lot of inputs to post on this site.
Let me do it step by step, once I get time to post my comments.
First important comment :
American Government is subsidising a lot to promote Electric Cars in USA.
There will be more than 10 all Electric Cars launched by various companies before end of 2010 in USA.
I have seen most of them kept for review by Electric Vehicle enthusiast.
American Experts' choice for battery material is Lithium Ion & they are focusing on the same for next few years.
Many companies have developed cars with range of 100 miles & top speed of 70 miles / hour in USA & Europe.
Most of these new cars are using ac drives.
There are quite a few charging station companies & there are big plans about charging stations all around US cities.
Wait for my next post with further details.
Best Regards,
Sachin Gupte.

India’s first ‘Green Rally’ from Surendernagar to Delhi on NO Petrol YObykes
India’s first Electric ‘Great Green Rally’ on NO Petrol YObykes was kicked off on Wednesday by Mr. Kanaji Thakor (Mayor, Ahmedabad) and Mr. Mukesh Bhandari (Chairman & CTO, Electrotherm) from Ahmedabad. After traveling distance of around 1200 km, the Rally will end at Raj Ghat in New Delhi on Sunday, 31st January 2010. A team of four riders led by Mr. Mahesh Kumar Kalakar, known for his participation in long-distance rallies for the various social causes, is undertaking this daunting task. Mr. Kalakar and his team are launching this initiative to create awareness about the hazards of climate change and to promote NO Petrol YObykes as environment friendly, reliable and economical mode of personal commutation for the common man.
While flagging off the rally, Mr. Mukesh Bhandari, Chairman & Chief Technical Officer, Electrotherm (India) Ltd, said, “Pollution has become a major cause of concern and if we don’t pay proper attention to this burning issue, the survival of the mankind will be at stake one day. Initiatives like this two-wheeler rally are must to create awareness about the issue among the general public. If a larger section of the society comes forward to adopt this new age means of transportation, it will certainly lead to a better quality of life.”
Giving more details about the rally, Mr. Mukesh Bhandari said, “The rally, organized with a theme of ‘Green India, Clean India’, will pass through cities like Himmatnagar, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jaipur and Gurgaon and reach Delhi on January 31, 2010. On an average, the participants, riding on YOEXL ER bikes, will travel a distance of around 100 km per day.”
“Mr Kalakar has participated in such rallies earlier and his significant contribution was acknowledged by Honorable President & Prime minister of India. He is going on this mission for the sake of environment and electric vehicle category,” he added.
Commenting on the Initiative, Mr. Kalakar said, “We choose NO Petrol YObykes for the rally as NO Petrol YObykes helps the common man by providing cost effective & safe mode of transportation without causing any air and noise pollution. By this 1200km ‘Green Ride’, we want to convey the message that NO Petrol YObykes are reliable and durable for the common man.”
Asserting that for the success of environment friendly electric vehicles, government support is must, Mr. Shailesh Bhandari, Managing Director, Electrotherm India Ltd., said, “Government support is very critical for the growth of the electric two wheelers in India; China is the biggest example. Currently in China, there would be more than 50 million vehicles on road, and this has happened due to the Government support by way of lower taxes. Also with more EV’s on road, the Government will save precious petrol too. If we take a ball park estimate of 100000 NO Petrol YObykes on road, the government will save forex to the tune of approx $20000000 per year. Much needed Government support has already started coming in from a few environmentally conscious states like Delhi, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh, Lakshadeep, etc. to name a few, in the form of RTO exemption / reduction, VAT reduction and subsidies to consumer in the order to promote electric two wheelers. More state/central government support in this direction will encourage even more customers to start using this cost effective and pollution-free vehicle.”

Re:INDIAN DESIGN-EV TO WIN THE RACE by PANKAJ PAL
Dear Murli,Thanks for your kind reply. my design are for both E-car & E-bike has variants and i have design the system for Indian market And global.
if I say for E bikes This bikes will give a range about 200+km in a charge with a cost of 50-60,000 and it can give 600 km+ but the cost varies. so its on the customers how much they can spend and accordingly they will get the product. and if the customer is paying 30000 in India for Bikes having range 40-70km in a charge ,of course they will pay 50-60,000 for 5 times range.lower the range lower the price and ALSO LOWER THE CUSTOMER INTEREST.so its on the customers demand what they want ,I CAN GIVE THE SAME WITH THE COST THEY WANT.
same thing is for electric cars-
For electric cars i have variants from 6- 15 lacs that are according to range, power pick up,comforts etc as we can see in any car model (cars have variants).ranges from 400-1000km has cost variation.
Dear Murli, Can you Please help me to bring these design to commercialize to make our Nation and Planet more green.
I hope you will.
Thanks & Regards

Reply: INDIAN DESIGN-EV TO WIN THE RACE by PANKAJ PAL
Hi Pankaj... your requirements are too ambitious. Considering the Indian market situations, it is not advisable to develop this type of vehicle as it will be too costly for development. This bike require advanced battery technology ( Li-ion ) which will be costing atleast 3 times its Lead acid counterpart.
I am also looking forward for this type of electric bike but its cost should be within the range of middle class people.
Thanks and regards,
Murali
